Introduction to Blog Writing

With SEO blog writing, there are specific writing requirements. You must write to satisfy both your audience and search engines. Therefore, this course will continue to introduce you to the detailed process required for writing seo friendly articles.

If you have read, “How to Write a Blog Post“, it stated that there are preliminary things that must be done to write a blog post. The introduction to blog research course explained the “preliminary” work suggestions for writing a successful blog. Therefore, this course assumes that your preliminary research has been done. The next part will teach you how to write SEO friendly content.

SEO Friendly Content

1. The Keyword

Your keyword should be related to your blog’s topic. Therefore, if you are starting a boat blog, you can write about boats. When writing a post, the keyword must be used in several places including: the page title, the permalink, the first heading, the first sentence, the last sentence, and in between.

2. Write Simple Sentences

Writing is another search engine optimization technique. Therefore, when writing, use complete sentences. But keep them simple. In addition, use punctuation marks. In this way, your search engine readability score will stay on point.

3. Use Transition Words

Using transition words will also improve your readability score. However, keep your audience in mind. After following all the rules sometimes a post can start looking a bit goofy. Therefore, you may have to add more content just to make the search engines happy. And in this way, not distract or confuse your readers.

4. Keep Paragraphs Short

The minimum length for a paragraph is three sentences. Therefore, when possible, your blog writing should have shorter paragraphs. Blog writing is not like writing an English assignment. The rules are very unique.

5. Add Page Links

And lastly, you should add page links. In fact, add an internal link and an external link. The internal link should be to another page on your site. However, the external link should be to a different website or blog. Both should be relevant page links. If you are writing a post about your teacup chihuahua’s new collar, link to another website that sells the new collar. However, do not overdo the referral links.

6. Write Useful Information

Remember that the goal is for people to keep coming back to your blog! Therefore, provide your audience with what they need and or want. In this way, you will generate genuinely useful information. If they do not see the value of your blog writing, they will not subscribe or follow your blog.

7. Use Headings

When you start writing your blog on WordPress, fortunately it defaults to “paragraph”. However, you can change the blog writing format to H1, H2, H3, H4, etcetera. Your first heading should include your keyword and must be H1. Use H1 only once and your keyword(s) in a heading only once. Each heading should not be followed by more than 300 words.

8. Write a Search Engine Title

If you are using the free Yoast SEO Plugin (currently only available with the WordPress Business Plan), you can add your search engine title from the WP Admin dashboard. From the dashboard, simply click on the specific blog post and then scroll to the bottom. You will see something called a “snippet preview”. Click on the title to make the search engine title box appear. Add your title for it to appear in the search engine results page. The title must also include your keyword.

9. Include a Meta Description

If you are using Yoast, below the search engine title box there will be a place for you to write a brief synopsis of the page. Your keyword should be included in the description box. If your page indexes, this description will also display in the search engine results page.

10. Add an Image

Next, add an image! Include the keyword on your image under “alt attributes”. Then, be sure to add your page URL on the image. In this way, if the image appears under the search engine image results page people can still land on your blog writing from the picture.

11. Publish Your Post

And last, but not least, publish your page! Hit the blue “publish button on the right side of your page. If you are using the Yoast SEO Plugin, you should have all green lights. If not, go back and make the needed adjustments.

12. Submit Your Post to Search Engines

WordPress will automatically submit your post to search engines. However, if you want more data to see how your blog is performing, you can register your blog. This is currently only an option for people with a business plan. You can register with any search engine, but Google is the best place to start. You must let the search engines know that you are on the web. Then, the search engines will send their robots to crawl your blog. It sounds a bit comical, but that’s what happens.
